Description
Include a part of maritime history from the 1920's to your collection with this photo of one of only a handful of cement ships ever constructed. This is the SS Sapona which ran aground and was shipwrecked in 1926 and then dragged out to this location for a permanent resting spot.
With a colorful history, it is rumored that many years prior to George H. W. Bush becoming President of the United States of America, he and his squadron performed bombing drills on this target. It is confirmed that during WW II, the US Navy and Air Force used the SS Sapona for target practice, however it is unknown for certain whether George Bush, Senior, actually flew training missions targeting the Sapona.
The Sapona is located south of Bimini in the Bahamas photographed in approximately 15-20 feet of water.
Our underwater photograph of the Sapona cement deck, and above-water of a young man jumping off the deck are perfect companions to this image.
